Tens of thousands people flock to Bailuzhou Park for the Lantern Festival
On the night of 28 Feb 2010, 400,000 citizens and visitors flocked to Bailuzhou Park to enjoy the colorful and brilliant lanterns. The number is a record during the Lantern Festival in Xiamen.
At about 7:50 pm, a full moon came out of the clouds, adding much charm and brilliance to the Lantern Festival. The number of tourists spending at the central and west parts of Bailuzhou Park hit 100,000.
Different from the past few lantern festivals, this year's Lantern Festival wasalmost double in size. It added a shopping street, gourmet district, recreational area and performance areas, all of which make the festival a lively temple fair.
Besides the local participants, a number of domestic tourist cities also were involve in the festival with high enthusiasm. Fancy lanterns from Yangzhou of Jiangsu Province gave off lights at the Lantern Festival. Yangzhou even formed an exhibition group of over 20 members, bringing the visitors southern charm by giving a wonderful music and dancing performance.
The Xiamen Lantern Festival is a cultural feast jointly hosted by both sides of the Taiwan Straits. Taichung, Kinmen, Penghu, Taiwan Publishers Association and Taiwan Straits Agriculture Foundation also sent their beautiful fancy lanterns and delicate gifts.
No incidences occurred despite the crowded conditions, for staff from Xiamen Municipal Works and Gardens Administration Bureau and Xiamen Public Security Bureau attended Bailuzhou Park to maintain order.
