This year's two sessions have highlighted the need to coordinate development across regional economies. With strong backing from the central government, NPC deputies are looking for ways to turn this into real benefit for regional economies. Our reporter Feng Ling spoke to deputies and economists for their insight into China's regional development.

The eastern Chinese region on the west of the Taiwan Strait got a boost from the State Council's support last year, targeting further integration of the Taiwan and Fujian economies. It has created many business opportunities across the strait.

Chen Yaozhong, NPC Deputy, Vice Chairman of Fed. of Taiwan Compatriots, said, "The decision by the State council immediately sparked a big reaction from Taiwan as soon as it was announced. A large number of Taiwan entrepreneurs are coming to Fujian province, to investigate the business environment, and seek cooperation opportunities. Fujian provincial government is also providing a better service to help economic cooperation between the two sides."

Premier Wen Jiabao said in his government work report that there should be more pilot programs in the economic zone for cross-strait cooperation. Deputies say this provides further flexibility to build cooperation.

Chen Yaozhong said, "The most important is the cooperation between industries on both sides, such as the IT industry, photo-voltaic industry, and modern service industry. Cooperation needs financial support. So we hope to launch more trial programs in financial services, to offer enterprises financial and insurance support."

In addition to this economic zone, eleven regional development plans were announced by the State Council in 2009, an unprecedented number. This has sparked a new wave of regional development across the country.

Experts say regional development has the advantage of allocating and using resources more efficiently. It requires local governments to specify local planning according to their own requirements.
