It takes pluck to follow fashion. Unless of course, you want the latest bushy-browed look.

Then, it seems, an eyebrow transplant can work wonders.

The operation is proving popular with women who tweezered away too much when pencil-thin brows were in.

Now that the fuller look - favoured by the likes of Keira Knightley and Emma Watson - is back in fashion, sparse brows are frowned upon.

Take a brow: Fuller eyebrows, which are favoured by the likes of Keira Knightley and Emma Watson, are back in fashion

Hair transplant surgeon Dr Bessam Farjo, from the Institute of Trichologists, said the numbers seeking eyebrow transplants had already doubled compared to last year.

The operation, which works in much the same way as a conventional hair transplant, costs £3,500.

'Many individuals don't realise the permanent damage that over-plucking can do, and have found that they've been unable to regrow their eyebrow hair,' Dr Farjo, who runs a clinic in London, said.

'Hair transplant surgery is the only way to restore eyebrows permanently and it's also the solution for those who naturally have very fair or sparse brows.'

Pencil thin: Pamela Anderson and Christina Aguilera sport the Nineties trend

In the 1980s, strong brows were fashionable, shown off by celebrities such as Brooke Shields and Madonna.

But in the 1990s and noughties the trend became for overstyled, pencil thin brows like those sported by stars such as Christina Aguilera and Pamela Anderson.

Men too began plucking their eyebrows and even shaving 'tramlines' into their eyebrows, like Spurs footballer Aaron Lennon.

Now the tweezers are being binned and while many women can simply regrow their eyebrows, others are finding years of treatment have left them unable to do so.

Dr Farjo said: 'We've seen a marked increase in the number of people coming forward for eyebrow transplants recently.

'The influx of enquiries has been ignited by the current celebrity trend for a fuller brow, and many women have to resort to transplant surgery in order to achieve the look.'
